Celebrating 2013 as Centenary Year of the Medical Research Council and International Year of Statistics

During 2013 the MRC is celebrating a hundred years of life-changing discoveries and taking time to reflect on its many achievements in medical research, acknowledging those who have supported it along the way and looking forward to what medical research will deliver in the future.

MRC-funded research continues to have a huge impact on both health in the UK and worldwide as well as our economy and society. Throughout 2013 the MRC will be running a series of exciting activities and events to showcase it's research successes and collaborations. You can experience life in a working laboratory, take part in experiments online, explore how past MRC discoveries have changed the way we live today, and most importantly, meet the scientists who make it all happen.

The MRC Biostatistics Unit is proud to announce it is also participating in the International Year of Statistics 2013, a worldwide celebration of the contributions of statistical science to the advancement of our global society.

During this yearlong celebration, MRC BSU and more than 700 organization- universities, research institutes, high schools, professional societies, government agencies and businesses- in nearly 100 countries are joining to celebrate and promote the importance of statistical science to the science community, businesses, governments, the news media, policymakers, employers, students and the public.

BSU Open Day 20th June 2013 - part of the MRC Open Week

Café Scientifique discussions will be held from mid-morning (20 minutes talk, 20-25 min. discussion) and will be open to adults and secondary school age children to celebrate the wonders of Statistics.

NHS rationing, NICE or nasty? The value of statistics

Challenges in deciding on which treatments should be funded by the NHS, and how statistics can be used to draw together the information needed to make a recommendation

Making sense of genomes

We can now sequence genomes, even of complex organisms such as humans, within a couple of days. The details of how genomes are driving biological processes, however, are just beginning to be understood and obtaining a fuller picture seems like a very long road ahead. How can computational and statistical modelling help?

Cognition: A matter of life and death

Investigating cognitive change in older persons is complicated by imperfect data. How statistical models can be used to understand the impact of cognitive change with increasing age will be shown

Addicted and in prison: how Biostatistics sorts out
the hazards of jailed heroin injectors

Carefully designed studies revealed how many adult prisoners were HIV-infected; how many injected heroin inside prison and how often; and a very high risk of overdose death in the 2-weeks after release from prison. Now, we are testing how to reduce these fatalities

Please note that parking on site and on the surrounding roads is extremely limited and you are advised to walk, cycle or take public transport. If travelling by bus, there are good bus links to the Addenbrookes hospital site where the Biostatistics Unit is located. Nearly 60 buses an hour, including the Cambridgeshire Guided Busway, serve the Addenbrooke's campus on weekdays, with many services originating from within the City of Cambridge.

Details of buses can be found below:
