MRC Biostatistics at the Cambridge Science Festival 2012
The MRC Biostatistics Unit will be presenting 'The Wonders of Biostatistics' to Cambridge Science Festival audiences who visit the Biology Zone at the New Museums Site on Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th March.
'The Wonders of Biostatistics' will show you how key ideas in biostatistics are used to understand, and improve, the public health. Different activities allow visitors to apply these ideas for themselves in a series of challenges!

Young Statisticians Meeting 2012
The conference will take place 2nd - 3rd April 2012 in Cambridge.
The Young Statisticians' Meeting (YSM) is an annual event specifically designed for career young statisticians, organised by career young statisticians. If you are in the early years of your statistical career (first 10 years) or currently studying for a PhD, MSc or BSc in statistics then YSM offers an excellent opportunity to present your own research in a friendly atmosphere, discover a variety of other statistical topics currently being researched and network amongst your peers.

The MRC Biostatistics Annual Armitage Lecture and Workshop activities will take place during the week 5th - 7th December 2012. We are delighted to announce that this year's Armitage Lecturer is Professor Els Goetghebeur.
The themes for previous years include: "Event history studies: design, estimation and prediction"; "Issues in Longitudinal Data Analysis"; "Epidemiological Methods"; among others.
Els Goetghebeur is Professor of Statististics at Ghent University, Belgium. For the past 5 years she was also adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Biostatistics of the Harvard School of Public Health (US). Previous appointments include a visiting lecturer position at Stanford University (US), and faculty positions at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (UK), Maastricht University (NL) and the Limburgs University Centre (B).
At Ghent University she teaches statistics courses at all levels for mathematicians as well as scientists more generally, she guides PhD students and helps organise courses ran by the Institute for Continuing Education in Science. She chairs the Centre for Statistics and directs the Advanced Master in Statistical Data Analysis. She is PI of the recently launched consortium of the industrial research fund 'Stat-Gent CRESCENDO: CREdible SCientific Evidence for New Discoveries and Outcomes'. These consortia represent concerted efforts with dedicated staff carrying the mandate to turn academic expertise into added value for industry and society. She is and has been on the editorial board of several journals. She is a statistical expert for EMEA (the European Medicines Agency). She served as a member on the 'Committee on methodological challenges in HIV prevention trials' of the Institute of Medicine (National Academies, US).
Her research focuses on methods for causal inference generally, on survival analysis and missing data problems, the design and analysis of (sequentially) randomised trials and multiple comparisons problems (for genetic data).
