The 20th – 22nd May 2016 saw the first ever International Conference of the Ethiopian Statistical Association (ESA 2016). The conference brought together statisticians from across Africa, Europe and America, to present their work, and to share and enhance knowledge.
BSU Programme Leader, Dr Daniela De Angelis, was one of the highly esteemed statisticians who spoke at the conference. The theme of the conference, ‘Repositioning Statistics to Meet Requirements for National, Continental and International Policy Agenda’ is very relevant to Daniela’s research on providing statistical methodologies to support the implementation and evaluation of public health policies in the area of infectious diseases.
Daniela spoke about her pioneering work on Bayesian evidence synthesis for the estimation of disease burden and on prediction of antibiotic resistance using genetic data. Daniela’s talks were very well received and have led to ongoing discussions and potential collaborations between the MRC Biostatistics Unit and Ethiopian Universities.
The ESA 2016 conference also marked the 25th anniversary of the Ethiopian Statistical Association. Daniela was privileged to be part of such a significant event and says: “I was honoured to be invited to such an event and very impressed by the commitment with which Ethiopian and other African statisticians strive to develop their expertise to use it to address pressing societal problems and improve quality of life in their countries”.
