We are delighted to announce that our Director, Professor Sylvia Richardson, has been elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences.

Fellowship of the Academy is based on exceptional contributions to the medical sciences. Fellows are drawn from biomedical science and academic medicine, as well as essential underpinning disciplines. Sylvia’s fellowship underlines the crucial role that statistics plays in medical sciences and clinical practise, and the importance of applying and disseminating statistical methods to a broad range of biomedical research. Pioneering statistical work involving fundamental aspects of medical statistics, clinical trials and public health has been developed by members of the BSU throughout its more than 100 year history.  Sylvia has played a key role in driving this work since she became Director of BSU in 2012 and is leading the continuously growing Unit through new and exciting challenges in cutting edge biostatistics. Sylvia and other new fellows will enrich the Academy across a broad range of fields.

The fellowship is a significant honour and a reflection of Sylvia’s great achievements and contributions to biostatistical research. Sylvia said:  “ I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to use my expertise to promote the Academy’s mission, and I look forward to facilitating close interactions between statistics and the biomedical research community. “

A formal ceremony for the admission of the new Fellows will be held in London on Wednesday 29^th June which Sylvia will be attending.
