Q: How do I apply for a PhD position at the MRC Biostatistics Unit?

Q: How do I find out what my fee status is?
A: please see the University of Cambridge fee status webpage
Q: What does an BSU Studentship provide?
A: A BSU Studentship covers all fees at the University of Cambridge home/EU rate, a taxfree stipend or living allowance and a generous travel and training budget.
Q: The University of Cambridge classes me as an overseas or islands student, am I eligible for a full BSU Studentship?
A: No. The BSU will only pay fees at the Home/ EU rate. All other students ie those classed as overseas or islands students by The University of Cambridge will be expected to meet the extra cost of the overseas fees themselves.
Q: How much financial support would I need as a University of Cambridge overseas or islands student to study for a PhD at the MRC Biostatistics Unit?
A: Currently, the University and the MRC Biostatistics Unit requires proof that you can cover the additional cost of the overseas fees according to the relevant faculty.
Q: Which faculty will I be in at the University of Cambridge?
A: The Unit is part of the University of Cambridge Faculty of Clinical Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Strong links exist between the Unit and the University of Cambridge Statistical Laboratory and all students are encouraged to make use of facilites there also.
Q: I am an EU student, am I eligible for a full BSU Studentship?
A: We can occasionally award full studentships to EU nationals though this is not always the case. We will advise at the time we offer a place whether this is the case or not.
Q: How much is the BSU Studentship stipend?
A: The MRC Biostatistics Unit is currently paying for 2015/16 an annual tax-free stipend of £16,000 (and covers the University and College fees in full). The stipend for 2016/17 has yet to be confirmed.
Q: If I am an overseas/islands student will you support my application for extra funding?
A: All PhD applications are ranked together in early January and the highest ranking applications that have also applied for University of Cambridge funding will be supported by the Unit.
Q: If called for interview, will the MRC Biostatistics Unit pay my travel expenses?
A: Yes, the MRC Biostatistics Unit will pay reasonable UK travel expenses. All claims require receipts.
Q: If I can fund my own studies, can I come and do my PhD at MRC Biostatistics?
A: Yes, we welcome self-funded PhD students but all applications are subject to the same selection procedure to ensure that the high standard of our PhD programme is maintained. Funding your own studies will not automatically guarantee you a place at the MRC Biostatistics Unit.
