Many congratulations to Research Associate at the BSU, Mia Tackney, who has been awarded an NIHR Advanced Fellowship.

The NIHR Advanced Fellowship is a Postdoctoral Fellowship that supports individuals undertaking research in a scientific discipline or sector who can demonstrate a contribution to improving health or care.

Mia's five-year fellowship, beginning in June 2025, will focus on digital outcome measures in clinical trials. Digital devices - such as smartwatches that track physical activity - offer novel ways to measure health outcomes throughout people’s daily lives, while reducing the need for clinic visits. However, these innovative measures also present many statistical challenges. These include validation of novel digital outcomes, analysis of data at different levels of granularity, and complex patterns of missing data. The fellowship will address these methodological problems.

Mia's application was made possible by funding from the BSU and the School of Clinical Medicine’s provision of bridging funds to support early career independent researchers.

Mia said: “There is a lot of potential for digital technology to enhance how health outcomes are measured in clinical trials. I'm extremely grateful to have an opportunity to contribute to this development through methodological research. I'm also thankful for the support by the Bridging Funding for ECRs Scheme which provided continuity and enabled me to apply for this fellowship. Most of all, I'm delighted to continue working alongside exceptional mentors and collaborators!”
